Varsity Sports Research Lab

Being part of this research lab, I have learned what it means to be part of a team. It's more than just a group of colleagues working towards a common goal, it's a close-knit team that truly cares about my growth and well-being. The collaborative environment has encouraged me to develop new skills and embrace challenges, knowing that I have a safety net of knowledgeable and kind individuals backing me up. This level of support has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and explore new areas of learning. Whether it's brainstorming ideas, finishing a project, or simply offering advice, this team has played a vital role in my development, both personally and professionally.

During my time in the lab I have learned how a research team works and the importance of communication. Although I was not an expert on sports or some of the topics we focus on in this research lab, I have been able to grow as a researcher and it has expanded my research and communication skills. While being a part of this team, I have been able to connect to the campus and our team and built connections with people I could never have imagined to have a connection with. Also, as a Latina, I have found pride and happiness in knowing that there are opportunities in research for people of my community as I am not the only Latina in this research. The culture we have in this lab is a culture of support and understanding, there has not been a time where I have not felt heard and supported by not only our leadership but also my colleagues. It means a lot to me to be part of this research team as I am able to grow as a researcher and build strong connections with other researchers.

Working in this lab has significantly helped my personal and professional growth. Frequently reading through research papers has sharpened my reading and analytical skills. Additionally, hands-on experience with data collection and visualization has improved my technical expertise. Collaborating with a diverse team has enhanced my ability to work effectively across various perspectives and backgrounds. Moreover, the guidance from my supervisors has been invaluable, as they periodically provide me with information about scholarships and internships. Most importantly, I’ve formed lasting connections with remarkable individuals!

Being part of this lab has opened up many opportunities and experiences for me. I have worked with first-generation students at Trevor Browne and received valuable preparation for my MCAT. I learned how to research articles, complete annotated bibliographies, conduct small group research studies, and collaborate with people from various demographics. These are just a few examples of the skills I gained while working in the lab.

There is a sense of purpose behind each project that has allowed me to acquire interpersonal and professional skills that can be applied in any setting. The lab taught me how to be a researcher. As an educator the most important part of my job is asking questions. In the lab not only was I encouraged and taught to ask questions; I was taught to answer them through research. I grew comfortable in not knowing all of the answers and learned to work through problems as a team. Learning to work in a team was super beneficial to me. The research and leadership skills I gained will continuously help me throughout my career.

Being a part of the team in the lab has been very life-changing. I have learned so many things from my teammates. We are all independent in our own work and responsibilities but at the same time we leaned on each other when we needed it. And that’s what a team should be, lifting each other up. It was great knowing that you had a team that had your back and that would work with you and help you with anything. It’s a beautiful experience knowing that everyone looked up to each other and admired each other’s work and accomplishments.
