Interdisciplinary efforts are becoming more critical for scientific discovery and translational research efforts. Highly integrated and interactive research teams share a number of features that contribute to their success in developing and sustaining their efforts over time. It is clear that scientific goals are founded on the collaborative effort. Therefore, SSFD is pleased to announce a new internal grant competition to facilitate interdisciplinary research solely within SSFD. A total of $25,000 will fund up to two (2) proposals designed to support interdisciplinary faculty research that leads to new proposals for external grants, with particular emphasis on funding release time from teaching, graduate research assistants, travel, and mentoring. All topics will be considered, but proposals focusing on racial equity will be prioritized. Interdisciplinary team proposals that deliver brown bags, teaching, active learning lectures, workshops highlighting challenges and offering strategies for successful interdisciplinary research, and/or sharings that include faculty and students of color – to learn/benefit the school and add to our diversity, equity, and inclusion goals will also be prioritized. There will also be a minimum of two investigators required within SSFD: one from Family and Human Development (FHD) and one from Sociology (SOC).  The goal of this proposal is to foster connectivity and build greater exchanges across SSFD through a team science research seed grant program. Faculty will learn the method of team science, focused on how to conduct research as part of a team. Faculty will produce work together, including developing scholarship that documents team science, its challenges, opportunities, and outcomes.

Projected Announcement: March 4, 2022
Projected Budget: Funds awarded can be carried over into the subsequent 22-23 fiscal year.

Required Elements for All Proposals:

1. Cover sheet with abstract and other required information.
2. A descriptive narrative of no more than 3 pages (including reference list, if needed), including:

• The significance of the proposed research or other scholarly activity;
• The rationale (justification) for the research or other scholarly activity;
• How the research or scholarly activity will benefit the applicant’s research program;
• Anticipated outcomes related to Team Science goals and how SSFD learn/benefit the school and add to our diversity, equity, and inclusion in regards to interdisciplinary research;
• Strength of proposed research centering racial equity, if proposal has a racial equity focus; 
• A detailed budget and justification for use of funds;
• A description of the research contributions of graduate assistants, if relevant;
• Any other pertinent information necessary for the review committee.

3. A curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum) documenting applicants’ scholarly or creative research.

Selection Criteria for Award(s):

Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:

1. The significance of the proposed activity.
2. The contribution proposed activity makes to the applicants’ field and area of scholarship.
3. The conception, organization, and clarity of the proposal.
4. The significance of the requested funding for the applicants’ research or other scholarly activity.
5. The explanation and justification of budgeted expenditures.
6. The feasibility for successful completion of the proposed activity.
7. Anticipated outcomes related to Team Science goals and contributions;
8. Strength of proposed research centering racial equity;
9. Potential for the project to lead to future external funding;
10. How the requested funds will advance efforts to secure external funding;

Post Award Requirements:

Grant recipients will be required to attend a post award interview with the SSFD research and communication team. The interview will be scheduled after the use of the funds. The interview will ask grant recipients to share the following:

1. Overview of the project
2. Overview of how the goals were met and what was achieved
3. A summary of advancements made towards inclusion, equity, and access
4. A statement of impact and/or next steps beyond the grant period
5. What is something that would be changed if the initiative was repeated
