Biography

As a family therapist, Dr. Dumka is interested in how people accomplish changes in their immediate social contexts. His research focuses on developing and testing family-based interventions to promote positive youth development, especially in ethnically diverse low-income families. Dr. Dumka has co-led projects funded by the National Institute for Mental Health and National Institute for Drug Abuse to develop and test the Bridges to High School program. The Bridges program targets young teens making the transition to middle school and their parents to promote school engagement and reduce mental health problems. Dr. Dumka also originated the Community Action Research Experiences (CARE) program, a year long experience in which undergraduate and graduate students apply action research skills to lead community improvement. CARE students collaborate with  local not-for-profit agencies to implement research projects that increase its effectiveness of these organizations. https://thesanfordschool.asu.edu/care
